Revisit an event devoted to Dolores Hayden's influential essay, What Would a Non-Sexist City Be Like? Speculations on Housing, Urban Design, and Human Work (Signs, 1980). Published over 40 years ago, Hayden's work has had a huge impact on feminist thinking about design, building, living and gender. She argues that architectural design and urban planning limit women's position in society, while also investigating radical alternatives that could facilitate a more equal role.

What would a non-sexist city really look like, and does it perhaps already exist?

In the light of the upcoming new series at Het Nieuwe Instituut, TNL! Collecting Otherwise, we look back at Hayden's ideas. Are they still relevant today, or do they now belong to the past? Have later generations taken a different view of the issues involved? And what would a non-sexist city really look like, and does it perhaps already exist? We relate these topics to the ideas of the former action group and feminist network Vrouwen Bouwen Wonen ("Women Build Homes"), whose archive has been acquired by Het Nieuwe Instituut.

TNL! Replay

Thursday Night Live! mines the archives to present the series TNL! Replay. From (past) live events to (online) conversations that remain relevant to today's social issues, the series is a retrospective of topics brought to the (virtual) table during Thursday Night Live! at Het Nieuwe Instituut.

Collecting Otherwise

The research project Collecting Otherwise proposes reading the collection and the practice of collecting and archiving from a perspective in line with current social changes. It focuses on developing alternative methodologies for the acquisition, classification and distribution of heritage.
