This evening the finalists of Prix de Rome Architecture 2018 will explain their choice of scenario for the Sixhaven area, discuss their research, and expand on their designs about the city of the future. Moderation by Saskia van Stein.
Prix de Rome Architecture 2018 presents four architectural visions of a possible future for the Sixhaven area in Amsterdam-Noord. Sixhaven exhibits many of the characteristics of an outlying area of an urban metropolis: its edges appear indefinite, lending an air of freedom which in turn gives rise to developmental speculation, both commercial and cultural.
Projecting possible future realities of a seemingly empty area is not unusual in architecture - likewise the conception of visionary and radical ideas about how and where we live, work and relax in the future. These four proposals for Sixhaven also show that the area can be developed differently. Bram van Kaathoven, Katarzyna Nowak, Rademacher de Vries and Alessandra Covini immersed themselves in their future visions for a non-commercial and meaningful design for the Sixhaven area. Alessandra Covini won the Prize with her Amsterdam Allegories, but all the proposals started with intriguing scenarios. The finalists will explain their choice of scenario this evening, discuss their research, and expand on what they want to say with their designs about the city of the future.
