Complex systems such as share trading arise from invisible (partly non-human) collective authorship, but act as autonomous entities. The notion of individual responsibility thus fades into the background. Have concepts like ‘control’ and ‘responsibility’ become obsolete as a result? Proxies on Trial consists of a workshop and a performance in which objects are presented as suspects in a lawsuit that challenges abstract issues such as climate change and globalisation. For example, can a fax stand trial as a representative of globalisation, and can a toaster be found guilty of climate change? The result is a fictional debate about real problems, questioning the place of humans in a world full of uncontrollable, more-than-human actors.
Studio Cream on Chrome
As the design duo Cream on Chrome, Jonas Althaus (BfA, Bauhaus University, 2014 & MA, Design Academy Eindhoven, 2018) and Martina Huynh (BA cum laude, Design Academy Eindhoven, 2018) unfold the social and political consequences of emerging technologies. They design and code responsive setups with an affinity to haptic and performative interaction that let users fully experience alternative socio-technological visions - challenging the dominant narratives in this field. Drawing from media theory and practical experiments they explore how the design of interfaces shapes the relation between user and tool.
