‘’I try to understand what I see. I see only what I understand. I have learnt to observe closely, just like you’. In de Thursday Night Workshop ‘Object Detection Roleplay’, Arthur Boer and Boris Smeenk invite you to discover more about how object detection algorithms ‘see’ based on a performative approach.
In ‘Object Detection Roleplay’ each participant creeps inside the skin of an everyday object and takes on the role of an object by acting out various video fragments in front of the camera. The performance is then analysed by an object detection algorithm that replaces the objects detected with previously selected images from its system. At the end of the workshop the various fragments are joined together to form a single whole in which the detected objects emphasise the dynamic relation between people, things and machines.
Arthur Boer & Boris Smeenk
Since 2016 Arthur Boer and Boris Smeenk (Digital Craft, Willem de Kooning Academy) have formed a Rotterdam-based artistic duo. They focus on contemporary digital culture, with a focus on artificial intelligence, computer vision and the dynamic relationships between people and machines. Their research is directed by technological experiments that focus on the relation between algorithmic statistics and the human imagination.
Thursday Night Workshop
Explore the design practice of thinkers, makers and designers. They will challenge you to think critically about the world around you and share their techniques and insights from their working methods. This workshop is related to the current programme Neuhaus at Het Nieuwe Instituut.
Before Thursday Night Live! you can grab a bite to eat with the speakers and staff of Het Nieuwe Instituut. At 18:00 Het Nieuwe Café will serve a light vegetarian meal. Dinner vouchers are available for € 7.70 up to a day before the particular Thursday Night event via the Tickets link.
