What if losing is a game? Game designer Karel Millenaar believes that every complex idea can be simplified while you play. Taking losing as his point of departure, he involves the players in a speeded up process of thinking and making from which different games emerge. Since you learn the most by doing, these games are played and evaluated together. Not dwelling too long on an idea and simply starting to mess around is precisely what makes problems easier to grasp.
The graphic and game designer Karel Millenaar calls himself the President of Play. He makes ugly things beautiful and dull games fun. With his company FourceLabs he focuses on invasive games in the physical and social space. His field of play ranges from installations to board games and video games and everything in between. He has worked for large companies like Philips and Corio, and for cultural institutes like the Utrecht University Museum, but he also appears at festivals and events. Millenaar is associated as a researcher with the Amsterdam School of the Arts.
