During How Do You Do: Open Archive, artists, designers, researchers and heritage professionals will discuss the creative re-use of open collections. The event, organised by Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, forms the conclusion of the Open Archive project.
How Do You Do
How Do You Do: Open Archive is an afternoon for heritage professionals and digital makers who are interested in the possibilities of creative reuse of heritage, and the opening up of online collections.
'How Do You Do' is a useful format for exchanging knowledge and skills. Rather than a series of stylised PowerPoint presentations, it provides honest stories about ‘the making of’ a project, with a focus on what does and doesn’t work in their experience. In 40-minute sessions, artists, designers and other experts in the field of open collections, creative commons and artistic re-use share practical experiences and expertise.
With Open Archive, Het Nieuwe Instituut and Sound and Vision share the possibilities of digital heritage collections with a new generation of creators, and vice versa. The project revolves around experiments with the online availability and artistic re-use of digital heritage. This creates space for a wide range of creative, technical and copyright interpretations.
The re-use of digital collections in museums and archives generates new narratives with potentially surprising and innovative forms. For Open Archive, Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision invited three makers to create new works based on their digital collections. Artist Guy Königstein, filmmaker Donna Verheijden and artist/designer Oana Clitan each developed a media work that will be exhibited at Het Nieuwe Instituut from 14 November 2019.
How Do You Do will be followed by the official opening of the Open Archive presentation in Het Nieuwe Instituut. To mark the opening, Michelle Kasprzak will talk to makers Oana Clitan, Guy Königstein and Donna Verheijden about creative reuse of open archives, as part of the Thursday Night Live! Programme from 19:30 to 22:00.

What exactly do we mean by 'open collections', and how can you reuse their materials? During the Re:Use clinic on 7 November at Het Nieuwe Instituut, Maarten Zeinstra (Open Nederland, Creative Commons Nederland) explains everything about copyright, Creative Commons, and the free use of archive materials.

Creative Reuse Of Open Archives
Guy Königstein, Donna Verheijden and Oana Clitan present their installations for Open Archive. Three makers spent six months researching the open, digital collections of Het Nieuwe Instituut and Beeld en Geluid (Sound and Vision) to develop a concept for their work. They are interviewed about their work processes and the reuse of archival materials.
