The series Gossips aims to bring women together, to re-generate and re-perform the original concept of ‘the gossip’ as a support structure for women’s ideas, thinking processes and exchanges. With writer and art critic Elisabeth Lebovici and curator Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez. Moderated by iLiana Fokianaki.
Gossips, Defiant Muses and Camp Sisterhood
In the second chapter of the series, writer and art critic Elisabeth Lebovici will discuss the collective struggles in relationship to art and activism during the AIDS era, addressed in her book ‘Ce que le sida m'a fait. Art et Activisme à la fin du XXe siècle’ [What AIDS has done to me. Art and Activism at the end of the 20th C.]. Curator Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez will speak about her research into collective activist and artistic practices in the second wave of French feminism, that culminated in the exhibition ‘Defiant Muses: Delphine Seyrig and the Feminist Video Collectives in France (1970s-1980s)’, currently on show at Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.
This series of lectures aims to bring women together, to re-generate and re-perform the original concept of the 'gossip’, which meant female companionship, as a support structure for women’s ideas, thinking processes and exchanges. It also wishes to collectivise feminist discourses and create a platform through which there can be new utterances to counteract and address anew all the words used to define and degrade women (Federici) and deconstruct and unfold them. Moreover, it aims to offer an open dialogue with its audiences, breaking epistemic injustices; knowledges that wish to operate contrary to sexist rhetoric and patriarchal ways that we witness in culture and society, by way of practicing and being otherwise, as cultural workers and women. The series is curated by iLiana Fokianaki.
Gossips: Reading Group
In preparation for the lecture, a closed reading group will take place at Het Nieuwe Instituut. The meeting will be drawing from recent projects of Lebovici and Bachelez, and will attempt to unpack the title of the event, inspired by and directed from the words of Catherine Lord and Angela Davis. Lebovici and Bachelez will read a selection of texts from their extensive writing, and hold a collective discussion with the participants in an intimate setting. Participation in the reading group is by invitation only.
Before the Thursday Night you can grab a bite to eat with the speakers and staff of Het Nieuwe Instituut. At 18:00 Het Nieuwe Café will serve a light vegetarian meal. Dinner vouchers are available for € 7.70 up to a day before the particular Thursday Night event via the Tickets link.
