Migrants are an often unheard and ignored group in Chinese society. Dalang Fever 3 develops a methodology in which data on the questions and needs of migrants can be better incorporated in design processes in rapidly changing urban areas such as the Dalang neighbourhood in Shenzhen. How can this data research lead to a sharper formulation of the relevant design questions and solutions?

For the 8th architecture biennale in Shenzhen, Het Nieuwe Instituut and International New Town Institute (INTI) present Dalang Fever 3 - How data can empower a migrant society. The project includes an exhibition, workshops, and research into the needs and questions of migrants in Dalang, in collaboration with Impact Hub Shenzhen.

Architecture Biennale in Shenzhen 

The biennial opened on 21 December 2019 and focuses on the rapidly changing technological innovations of urban space. At Thursday Night Live! we discuss the project and the ways in which data research can be used as a basis for integrated spatial, digital, and social design proposals. With Tat Lam (Impact Hub Shenzhen), Linda Vlassenrood (curator, Dalang Fever 3), and the expected Dutch participants (TBC) at the workshop in January 2020.

Tat Lam 

Tat Lam trained as an urban designer and architectural researcher, practicing urban design and regional development consultancy. He graduated from CUHK, Columbia University, and the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL. He is CEO and founder of Shanzhai City, a social enterprise creating data solutions, products, and services to unlock capital for sustainable development, both for enterprise and grassroots clients and users. He is also co-founder of Impact Hub Shenzhen, a Chinese social enterprise developing social research and advocating sustainable development in Shenzhen.
